Half hull model of the steam frigate USS Wampanoag. Mounted on a mahogany board. 19th C. 11 in. x 64 in
The Wampanoag was a 4215 ton steam frigate, laid down at the New York Navy Yard in 1863 as part of a Civil War program to build large, very fast, steam cruisers. Launched in December, 1864 she was not commissioned until September, 1867. The vessel ran trials in February, 1868, attaining speeds in excess of 17 knots, a very high figure for that time. Following brief service as flagship of the North Atlantic Fleet, she was decommissioned in May, 1868. The following year her name was changed to Florida, and in 1874 she was refitted for use at the New London, Connecticut Naval Station where she remained until she was sold in February, 1885.
