Sailing Card for Clipper Ship BLACK HAWK

Product Description

Rare clipper ship sailing card for the famous BLACK HAWK, Crowell, Master, for Sutton & Co's Dispatch Line. Printed on coated cardstock, gold on white lettering with decorative borders. The card notes a passage of 106 days and that she is one of W. H. Webb's best ships. Very fine with minor losses on the back where the card had been mounted in a frame.

Provenance: The India House, New York

The BLACK HAWK was built in1856 by noted shipbuilder William H. Webb in New York. She was a medium clipper known for her speed, and made 20 runs from New York to San Francisco. She was sold to German owners in 1882 and disappears from the registries after 1892. Capt. Crowell, like many clipper ship captains, hailed from Cape Cod.
