The central element of this marvelous drawing is a beautiful compass rose set in a square with the names of 4 academic disciplines (Grammar, Rhetorick, Arithmatic and Logic) inscribed in each corner. Surrounding the compass rose are various images including 4 buildings, 3 entwined hearts, a church, tree, 2 curious men, a horse or donkey and wagon, and a ship, all with titles. All the images are within a double circle. The renderings are very scrimshaw-like in style. This piece may be a navigational student's exercise. Late 18th C. Good condition.
